The Young Master's Monologue (Ciel Phantomhive)

I often wonder; what would have happened if Sebastian didn’t come? If there was no such thing as demons, who make contracts with mortals and fulfil their wishes, purely out of greed and lust for their eternal souls? I would most likely still be there. Trapped. Given less freedom than a defiant dog. A toy at the hands of monsters. No one ever escaped. I may even have been dead by now. But he came. A black swirl of sin came to my aid. I make it sound as if he was my saviour, but he was nothing more than a starting point. A mere pawn. Regardless, he is also my knight upon the chessboard. A knight with extra powers that go against the rules. That is to say, if life were chess. But it is not. We make our own rules, in order to push ourselves further and further up the ladder of life - in order to accomplish our goals. If you’re weak, the game of life may defeat you, and you’ll become the fallen king. The opposition will win, and you have lost. Checkmate.

It is rather ironic how a demon is my knight. His intentions of being my aid and my shadow are nothing more than an act of lust for my soul, but despite that, he is more loyal than any human could be. Humans always have an ulterior motive, even I, myself, to some degree. I wonder, is my soul really that desirable to him, that he undergoes the aesthetics of a butler? I shall never know what goes through that demon’s head, or how his mind works. Nor do I want to know. He is my advanced knight. My pawn. A stepping stone in order for me to get what I want. And he shall never defy me.

For he is my butler.
